Before we begin to think about what we can do for God, we must ponder on what we truly believe about God.

I am the most “type A” person I know. I love to check things off my list. I love calendars. I love being organized and feeling as though I have accomplished something for the day. Can you relate? It’s great to know you’ve completed a task. No matter what it took to get there, it’s done.
Often times I have the same mind set in my walk with the Lord. I think, “Okay, I’ve done this and this. So I’ve been successful!” Right? Actually, incorrect. As believers we must evaluate our hearts, and meditate on what we truly believe about the God we serve. Though we will not be perfect, and though we cannot fully understand God, we should really think about why it is that we perform the tasks that we do for Him. I know that many times God asks us to do things we don’t understand. We don’t have to understand, but we must have faith in Him. After all, we can only please God through faith.
So what do we believe about God? Do we truly believe that He is all-powerful, loving, full of grace, our TRUE peace and joy, and forgiving? If not, why is it that we serve Him and do so many “tasks” for Him? The truth is, God IS all-powerful, loving, full of grace, our TRUE peace and joy, and forgiving. He IS truth. God desires that our hearts believe that, and He desires that our hearts believe He is who He says He is before we ever try to “check things off our list” for Him. God does not need us to serve Him, but He commands it for our good. In order to serve God effectively, we must believe in Him fiercely.

This reminds me of the night I asked God what He wanted me to do for Him next. My husband and I were both retired, and our youngest daughter had left the nest. I finally had all kinds of time to serve Him, but I wanted to make sure I wasn’t just “doing stuff to be doing stuff.” So, I asked.
The next morning I woke up with a beautiful song playing in my head from “Phantom of the Opera.” I recognized the music, but the only words I knew were those of the last line: “Love me, that’s all I ask of you.” I took that as my instructions, for then, and I spent time “sitting at His feet” for a season, until He began leading me to “do stuff” again. 😉

I LOVE that story! Wow. God does ask us to love Him, and then He certainly does the rest through us at the right time.
